The 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival
The yearly Pitchfork Indie Music Festival in Chicago, IL is the mecca of music festivals for people who listen to the kind of "hipster" music that music blogs go nuts over.

Animal Collective may just be Pitchfork's favorite band (after their not so great review of Radiohead's most recent album.) My own feelings on Animal Collective are a bit more mixed. While I respect that they record music that challenges me, I don't always enjoy listening to it. But with that said I have had some unique listening experiences with Animal Collective and I would love to see them play live (I have not yet.)
Fleet Foxes make pretty tunes that put a slightly modern twist on the late '60s sounds of Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills, & Nash. If you love acoustic guitar playing, poetic lyrics, and lovely harmonies then you should definitely give these guys a listen.
Guided By Voices have 16 albums to their name. 1994's Bee Thousand and 1995's Alien Lanes are considered by most GBV fans to be their best albums so I would probably start there if you are new to the group.
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti is one of the strangest bands I've ever listened to. I'm not even sure I actually like their music that much but I do find them to be quite interesting and I do love their song "Round and Round." Their shtick seems to be doing a bizarre version of schlocky 1980s era pop.
Battles creates intense rhythmically focused recordings. You are very unlikely to hear yourself singing a Battles song in the shower. They make the kind of stuff that I can enjoy a lot if I am in the right mood but that I find pretty irritating most of the rest of the time.
